“Es que un burito en su bolsillo o estás feliz de verme?”
I got chatting with a friend in México during my last trip to Montevideo and we both agreed that I should write a piece about the state of gay sex while I’m down here.
And face it, I like getting it on, but admittedly sex on business trips does not happen that often. You would think that with apps like Grindr, Scruff, Growlr, etc… and websites like Recon, Squirt, BearWWW, Bear411, etc… ordering in wouldn’t be that hard.
In the 8 years I’ve been travelling North and South America for work, it’s been hit or miss, and I’d say more often that it’s a miss. And that’s okay, I have no problem taking matters into my own hands, make a video for Sir, and catching up on sleep, etc…
Hey, it’s a buffet out there and everyone is looking for the next best thing.
So where does everyone hang out online in Montevideo?
- Growlr doesn’t seem to be the place, but you will find a lot of Argentinian and Chilean Bears here
- Scruff has a handful of men, and again a lot of Argentinian and Chilean men
- Grindr has a lot more men from Montevideo if you’re looking for thinner men
- Recon has one Leatherman on it from Montevideo that’s regularly on
- Squirt is not active
- Bear411 and BearWWW are quite active – the latter more so and it’s where I’ve had the most success
- If you’re into Bears like me, there is a hidden Ososuruguayos Facebook group. It’s quiet, unfortunately, but occasionally someone will setup a bar night at Chains which is a local bar.
Keep in mind, we’re talking about a country with 3.3 million people with 1.8 of them living in Montevideo. That’s less than the number of people that live in the Greater Toronto Area in the whole country! So it’s not surprising that there aren’t many men out there.
It also probably doesn’t help that it’s winter, but then again I digress.
There is a bath house here in Montevideo – Sauna Horus (formerly Korpus) – which was interesting. It seemed relatively clean, but can’t say it was the most comfortable bath house I have ever visited. It has a stream room, dry sauna, showers and features three floors. But within ten minutes of walking into the place, I had already helped three men get off. Okay, that was pretty hot.
It also looks like there are swingers clubs here such as Sauna Venus and Sauna Blue Cat (also advertised for Lesbians!)
But keep in mind that your mileage may vary – just as it would in the city in which you live. If you’re here for a long time and pick up an STI, it can make a great trip a real pain in the ass – literally.
Make sure you bring your own protection. I know some of the guys at Sauna Horus would have loved to sit on me with no question.
So sex in Montevideo is out there.
I’ve not been to any of the bars – yet. Admittedly, I’m not much of a bar guy, but I did meet a couple that have been helping me with my Spanish and I might go out with them one night.
Uruguay is quite progressive on it’s stance for gay rights. LGBT rights in Uruguay are among the most liberal in South America with sexual activity decriminalized in 1934. Anti-discrimination laws are in place, support for trans rights, and gays and lesbians are allowed to serve openly in the military.
Uruguay also became the first Latin American country to have a national civil union law, titled Ley de Unión Concubinaria. Couples may also adopt too. So this has helped me to feel a lot more comfortable on my trips here as well. Interestingly, this month, Uruguay has recognized a marriage that was registered outside of Uruguay – hence creating a problem where people in the country can get civil unions but cannot be married, yet there is a marriage recognized. So marriage for homosexuals is coming.
So I feel pretty comfortable here.
For Canada Day weekend, I will be heading to Buenos Aires and checking out the scene there, which I hear is great.
